Flyleaf - Lacey Mosley (Vocals)

Is this your first time in Germany?
We’ve been here before. We played „Rock am Ring“ and „Rock im Park“
Do you like Germany?
I love it here. People here are getting very excited about being at a concert so they are already having a good time. In America it is more like „what can we get from you?“ and here it is like „they gave so much“.
If you have to say who Flyleaf are what would you say?
I don’t know. We are just regular people like anyone else. We have a story like anyone else and it just happens that we play infront of people on stage. Miracles can happen to anyone I guess.
What does Flyleaf actually mean?
Flyleaf is a blank page in the front and at the end of a book. It is like a dedication page, like a moment of clarity before you start the story.
Now I’d like you to describe your music and do you think that it is possible to categorize it in some kind of a genre?

Oh I hope not. (schmunzelt) But I’m sure someone will. Well, all five us have different, musical tastes and all five of us would try to categorize it differently. I think the most important thing about our music is, cause it probably goes under a rock category but it’s just a matter of whether or not. The music reflects the story in the lyrics. It’s not the other way ‘round y’know. It’s like we try to make the song which is good for when you are in a place where peolpe don’t speak your language and maybe they don’t understand the words. We’re trying to make a song where people understand what we mean even if they don’t understand the lyrics y’know. So if it is sad… you hear it, If it is angry… you hear it, if it is in love you hear it.
How do you develop music? Do you have any rite?
It is really a matter of whether or not. I remember a radio interview with Avril Lavigne and she said something like „ I write a song every day. That is music writing how it is for me.“ and I don’t know how that works, because I would never be able to do that, because the song comes out of something really extreme. Sometimes it’s music, sometimes it’s lyrics and sometimes it’s poetry but it is something that changed my mind and it is hopefully something that makes others change their minds in some way. That is where it starts and you never know when it’s gonna happen.
So it is just like you get kissed by a muse?
Yeah.
How far was the way to get signed? What were the most important points?
Well, the most important thing, I think is that you have to know that this is what you are meant to do, because if you aren’t, it’s just a worthless struggle, unless you pay attention and you appreciate the journey, because I see a lot of musicians who struggle and give up everything in their lifes and.. like my mom was a musician and she struggled all her life and we were very poor and I thought this is what being a musician means. You’re gonna be poor. I think the most important thing is that you know, in your heart that you are supposed to do this and whatever faith you have you go on that, because it is miraculous. It is a one in a million chance y’know? There’s a million great bands out there. There is a million people who are more talented then you are, and they have just as much passion. It is a matter of whether all everything comes together right. What also is important, is that you just play as many shows as possible y’know? Playing infront of the soundguy, because he may like you enough to put you with a bigger band who already has a fanbase. Play infront of your mom and dad whatever, just play as many shows as possible. Everybody’s opinion is valuable. And we sucked at the beginning. It was just something that we knew to keep going. Even though it was awful and we didn’t see it. It was just like something blinded us to see how awful our band was. (lacht)
Where are your roots as musicians?
We all come from a different place. Our drummer likes classic rock and that is really good for a drummer, I think, because it’s very solid. Sameer likes bands like Radiohead and you can hear this in his parts. And Jared likes more crunchy, newer stuff. Pat loves all kinds of music. He likes the Deftones, he likes Folkmusic… you would never know. He is a scary man. Well, and I love all kinds of music. I was never interested in certain kinds of music or certain singers. When I was younger I liked Mariah Carey and things like that. Well, she is a great singer, but what I saw in rockmusic was that they were so honest and vulnerable and beautiful to me. That was what I thought when I first saw Nirvana and Pantera and read their lyrics for the first time. I love screaming music. But it has to have a purpose. If there is screaming for no reason it is silly to me. But if there is anger and passion and whatever… urgency then I think that it is important to see that sight of people. Like to say you are not the only one who gets that mad, or you are not the only one that’s been that hurt, y’know. We are not always like that, but it is okay.
I read that you toured with a lot of bands. You are doing this tour with Stone Sour. What was the most incredible band you ever toured with?
Wow. This is a good question. Everybody was cool for their own reasons. I loved touring with POD. I loved their show. They embrace their audience somehow. They are passionate and our message is kinda the same. Then I loved touring with Korn, or Stone Sour. It is really good.
Cool guys?

They are awesome guys. You would think that you would have to picture around them, otherwise they’d bite your head off or something, but they are just regular people too, and I think this is really important to know for people. People who are famous are just people like anyone else is.
Already last question. Do you wanna say anything to your German fans or German people?
I just wanna say thanks y’know. Thanks so much for giving us a chance. People can be prejudiced like when you hear a girl infront of a band or a band from the US or a band from Texas, well whatever. You can think there certain ways, but thanks for giving us a chance and hopefully it’ll mean something for you because that is the whole thing. I really appreciate it when someone says „I like that song, because I can relate to to the lyrics somehow“.
So thanks for all this. That makes us wanna come back some day.
